Overview

The VIAVI T-BERD/MTS-2000 is a handheld modular test set for the installation, turn-up and maintenance of optical fibers across enterprise, metro and FTTx/access networks, including point-to-point links and point-to-multipoint passive optical networks (PONs). It accepts one field-installable application module, and the unit is supplied with a hands-free case that keeps the essential fiber test tools at hand during pole-top or underground work.

Test capabilities depend on the installed module and built-in options. They include multimode and single-mode OTDR modules (including Quad, CWDM and DWDM OTDR), FiberComplete modules for automated insertion loss and optical return loss (IL/ORL), OTDR and fault finding, a CWDM optical spectrum analyzer and a DWDM optical channel checker. Connector end faces can be inspected and graded to IEC pass/fail criteria with a digital analysis microscope. Optional built-in hardware adds a broadband optical power meter, a visual fault locator and an optical talkset.

The instrument has a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen and one-touch operation, including the SmartOTDR test mode. Application modules used with the T-BERD/MTS-2000 can also be used with the T-BERD/MTS-4000 V2, and the two platforms are interoperable.

Connectivity and data management

The unit has one 1G Ethernet port and USB ports, with optional built-in WiFi and Bluetooth. These support remote control, setup and data uploads and downloads, and report transfer to PCs, tablets and smartphones. Smart Access Anywhere (SAA) lets field technicians be coached and supported remotely. The platform works with StrataSync, VIAVI's hosted cloud service for asset, configuration and test data management, and with VIAVI Test Process Automation (TPA) through the Job Manager option.
