Overview
The PLC series are manual polarization controllers based on fiber squeezing technology. Pressure is applied to a single-mode fiber to change its birefringence, which changes the polarization of the output light. A thumb screw sets the amount of pressure, and a rotatable center section sets the pressure axis.
The series has several configurations. Pigtailed versions (PLC-002 and the miniature PLC-M02) come with built-in fiber, with or without connectors, and can be spliced to other components with minimal loss. Drop-in versions (PLC-003 lab version and PLC-006 miniature version) control polarization in fiber already in a system: a length of fiber is placed in the slot on top of the device, so no part of the system has to be disconnected.
The fully connectorized versions come with female (PLC-004) or male (PLC-005) FC-type connectors. With standard FC/ST or FC/SC adapters they can also connect to ST and SC connectors. They can interconnect polarization-maintaining fibers through standard connectors without aligning the fibers' birefringent axes. Optional scales make it easy to repeat earlier settings.
Typical uses include fiber laser and OCT system integration and general laboratory work.
