Overview
The PLC-005 is the male-connector version of the fully connectorized PolaRITE manual polarization controller in the Luna PLC series (formerly General Photonics). Its counterpart, the PLC-004, has female connectors. Both models connect directly to the system, so no fiber pigtails need to be handled.
The controller is based on fiber squeezing. Pressure applied to a single-mode fiber changes its birefringence, and this changes the polarization of the output light. A thumb screw sets the amount of pressure. A rotatable center section sets the pressure axis.
The unit ships with FC type connectors. Standard FC/ST or FC/SC adapters let it work with ST and SC type connectors. The device is well suited to connecting polarization maintaining (PM) fibers through standard connectors, because the birefringent axes of the PM fibers do not need to be aligned. Optional scales let users repeat earlier settings. This is useful in laboratories where the same polarization adjustment has to be made again.
