Overview
The PLC-003 is the lab version of the in-line, drop-in model in the PolaRITE PLC series of manual polarization controllers, a product line that came from General Photonics. It is installed in a fiber optic system to control the polarization state of light, and no part of the system has to be disconnected. To use it, a length of fiber is placed in the slot on top of the device.
The controller works by squeezing the fiber. Pressure applied to a single-mode fiber changes its birefringence, and with it the polarization of the output light. A thumb screw sets the amount of pressure. A rotatable center section sets the pressure axis.
The fiber can be held by a clamp with screws or a clamp with magnets, chosen when ordering. The drop-in design works with fibers of any size. A miniature version of the drop-in controller, the PLC-006, is also available for tighter spaces.
