Overview

The VIAVI SmartOTDR E100AS is the entry configuration of the SmartOTDR handheld fiber tester family. It is a single-wavelength 1550 nm AS-range instrument intended for field testing of metro and access networks, combining OTDR measurement with an integrated continuous-wave light source on the OTDR port and optional optical power meter, visual fault locator and connector inspection scope.

The instrument uses a tailored OTDR user interface with one-touch operation and automatic analysis, so technicians of any skill level can obtain pass/fail results. Generic or user-defined setup configurations help avoid setup errors and keep results consistent. The E100AS can be upgraded in the field with software options that add a 1310 nm wavelength, the Smart Link Mapper (SLM) result view, or an increased dynamic range of 37/35 dB at 1310/1550 nm.

Connectivity and data management

Connectivity options include 4G/5G smartphones via USB and optional Bluetooth/WiFi, enabling remote control as well as data and work-order transfers to and from tablets, smartphones and computers. Optional SmartAccess Anywhere (SAA) opens a cloud tunnel so a remote expert can access and operate the instrument. Reports can be generated on board in PDF format and shared with WebDAV-compatible cloud servers. A one-year trial of the cloud-based StrataSync service for asset, configuration and test-data management is included.

Design

The SmartOTDR is a light, compact, hands-free design with a 5-inch high-visibility outdoor capacitive touch screen and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery rated for up to 17 hours of operation.
