Overview

The VIAVI SmartOTDR is a lightweight, compact handheld fiber tester for field testing of metro and access networks. It combines OTDR measurement, fiber end face analysis, optical loss testing and a visual fault locator in a single instrument, with a tailored OTDR interface and automatic analysis for technicians of different skill levels.

The family comes in single-, dual- and tri-wavelength versions covering 1310 nm and 1550 nm and in-service 1625 nm or 1650 nm wavelengths, in AS-, A- and B-range performance classes. It is optimized for PON testing through splitter ratios up to 1x128 with FTTH-SLM, and it supports distributed PON architectures, including unbalanced, tapered and indexed splitters. The Smart Link Mapper (SLM) result view simplifies OTDR analysis, and generic or user-defined setup configurations help keep results consistent.

Connectivity and data management

Connectivity options, including smartphones via USB and optional Bluetooth/WiFi, allow remote control and transfer of data and work orders to and from tablets, smartphones and computers. Optional SmartAccess Anywhere (SAA) opens a tunnel in the cloud so a technician can access and operate the instrument remotely. The instrument works with WebDAV cloud servers and generates pdf reports onboard with FastReport. It includes a one-year trial of the cloud-based StrataSync service for asset, configuration and test-data management.

Upgrades

The SmartOTDR can be upgraded in the field with software options such as FTTH-SLM, FTTA-SLM, Cable-SLM, Loopback OTDR, SFP Protect Mode, GPS and password protection, as well as hardware options for a VFL, an optical power meter and WiFi/Bluetooth.
