Overview

The ONT-804 is the 4-slot, display-less mainframe of the VIAVI ONT-800 Optical Network Tester family. The ONT-800 platform is a configurable, multi-protocol, multi-port test system for R&D and system verification of optical transport ICs, modules and systems. It builds on the ONT-600 to provide the bandwidth, power and cooling required for testing at 600G per lambda and beyond, including 400G and 800G optical pluggables.

The ONT-804 takes up to four hot-swappable application modules and ships with a 19" / 21" rack mount. It runs a Linux operating system with VNC-based remote operation and can run stand-alone software such as Wireshark on the controller board. Connectors for an external keyboard, mouse and HDMI display are provided; the front panel carries a small graphic LCD with two push buttons for the IP address, reference clock settings and module connectivity check.

Remote control and automation

The mainframe can be controlled via SCPI commands over the LAN port. Modules are addressed independently and in parallel and may be shared among multiple users and across multiple mainframes network-wide. Scripting support is provided for Tcl/Tk, Python, C libraries and LabVIEW, and the interactive GUI works in parallel with remote control. All ONT application modules share the same GUI, automation and scripting architecture.

Clock and synchronization

The controller and clock module has an internal master clock with ±1.0 ppm accuracy and provides BNC, Bantam and Time of Day inputs and outputs for external synchronization. An optional factory-fitted GNSS receiver with rubidium oscillator supports GPS, Glonass, Beidou and Galileo.

VIAVI positions the ONT-804, together with the ONT-812 and ONT-812A, for cost-sensitive and scripted applications in system verification testing and manufacturing.
