Overview

The VIAVI T-BERD/MTS-5800 is a handheld network tester for installing, turning up and maintaining networks. It supports both legacy and current transport technologies used in metro/core, mobile backhaul and business services installations, and covers the service life cycle from fiber characterization through service activation, troubleshooting and maintenance.

Ethernet and transport testing

The platform supports TDM/PDH, SONET, SDH, Fiber Channel, OTN and dual 10 G Ethernet. Ethernet test functions include TrueSpeed TCP throughput testing per RFC 6349, enhanced RFC 2544, SAMComplete per ITU-T Y.1564, burst testing per MEF 34, J-Profiler, wirespeed capture/decode and the automated J-Mentor analysis. Single- and dual-port versions are available.

Timing and fronthaul

Integrated timing and synchronization testing covers PTP/1588v2, SyncE, wander and one-way delay. For cell sites, the instrument performs CPRI/OBSAI Layer 1/Layer 2 fronthaul testing, emulates baseband and remote radio units, and supports RF over CPRI (RFoCPRI) analysis, allowing remote radio heads to be checked from the bottom of the tower.

Fiber testing

The T-BERD/MTS-5800 accepts VIAVI 4100-Series OTDR modules, including CWDM and DWDM variants, as well as the COSA-4055 CWDM and OCC-4056C DWDM analyzer modules. It works with Smart Link Mapper, fiber inspection microscopes and optical power meters. The unit uses a multitouch screen and scripted workflows, and is part of the VIAVI Remote PHY turn-up and maintenance solution.
