Overview

The VIAVI CellAdvisor JD723C is a handheld cable and antenna analyzer in the JD720C series that covers 100 MHz to 2.7 GHz. It is designed for cell-site installation and maintenance. It combines line sweep measurements, RF and optical power measurement, and fiber inspection in one lightweight instrument.

Most faults in mobile networks occur in the cell-site infrastructure: the antenna system, the RF and fiber feed lines, and the connectors. Contaminated fiber connectors are the most common fiber-related problem. Sites with fiber-based feed lines need both RF and fiber verification. The JD723C covers both, so a separate fiber instrument is not needed.

Measurements

The JD723C performs 1-port tests: reflection (VSWR or return loss), distance to fault (DTF), 1-port cable loss, 1-port phase and Smith chart display. With external VIAVI power sensors and USB optical power meters it measures RF and optical power. With the P5000i fiber microscope it inspects fiber connectors and gives pass/fail results. Its built-in database has more than 80 wireless frequency bands and more than 95 cable types, and users can add more of each.

Operation and connectivity

The instrument has a 7-inch transflective color touch screen with an outdoor mode for direct sunlight and a backlit keypad for use in the dark. Traces can be compared with Trace Overlay and analysed using zoom zones, dual display, and limit lines with automatic pass/fail. Reports in PDF or HTML can be generated on the instrument. The JDViewer and JDRemote PC applications handle post-analysis and remote control. Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi and TestWizard are available as options.
