Overview
The VIAVI OLP-82P is a handheld instrument from the SmartClass Fiber family that combines pass/fail fiber end-face inspection with optical power measurement (OPM) in a single device. It is designed for the installation and maintenance of single-mode and multimode fiber optic networks, where it certifies connector end-face condition and measures optical power with one button push and returns pass/fail acceptance results.
The optical power meter is calibrated at multiple wavelengths between 780 and 1625 nm and supports dual-wavelength measurements at 850 and 1300 nm or 1310 and 1550 nm using saved reference levels for insertion-loss testing. Acceptance criteria can follow IEC 61300-3-35 or customer-specific requirements, managed through dedicated profiles on the instrument.
Inspection and reporting
Fiber end faces are inspected either with a connected P5000i digital analysis microscope or, on the OLP-82P, with the onboard dual-magnification patch-cord microscope (PCM). Using both allows bulkhead (female) and patch-cord (male) connectors to be inspected without changing tips, and the fiber image is centered automatically on the screen.
Up to 10,000 inspection and measurement results are stored on the device and exported to a PC over a mini-USB connection. FiberChekPRO PC software manages acceptance criteria and generates certification reports documenting that work meets industry standards or customer specifications.
Form factor
The instrument has a 3.5 in color touch screen with a smartphone-style user interface, a rugged weather-proof housing, two USB host ports for additional devices such as the P5000i microscope, and runs from AA alkaline batteries, a rechargeable Li-ion pack, the AC adaptor or a USB port. An optional hands-free carrier stores the microscope, visual fault locator and cleaning materials for use at demarcation points, on telephone poles or at cell towers.
