Overview
The VIAVI Trilithic 1G DSP with TDR is a handheld plant maintenance meter that combines CATV signal level and spectrum measurements, a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem and a coaxial cable time domain reflectometer (TDR) in one instrument. It is intended for smaller cable systems and contractors where one technician may be responsible for maintaining and servicing the entire cable plant and needs DOCSIS 3.1 and 3.0 service tests together with physical and service layer measurements.
The meter covers a 1.25 GHz frequency range with analog, SC-QAM and OFDM channel measurements, full channel plan scan with tilt, return spectrum analysis from 4 to 205 MHz and forward spectrum analysis from 5 to 1250 MHz. The internal DOCSIS 3.1 modem operates in DOCSIS 3.0 (32x8) and 3.1 modes and supports throughput testing of up to a gigabit per second through a dedicated Ethernet test port or the cable modem. Upstream linear distortion, ingress-under-carrier, source generator, frequency domain reflectometer and optional sweep functions are also provided.
TDR
The built-in step-type TDR has a measurement range of over 4000 meters with zero dead zone and a distance accuracy of less than one foot at any cable length. No pulse width selection or gain adjustment is required before a measurement, and cable impedance matching is automatic. When a TDR test is needed, the technician switches to the TDR test mode on the meter instead of returning to the vehicle for a separate instrument. The TDR is used to locate poor splices, water intrusion, pinched or poor quality coax, impedance mismatches and bridged taps, to determine how much cable remains on a reel, and to qualify new hardline extensions and drop replacements.
Operation and StrataSync
The 1G DSP has a large color touchscreen with pass/fail indicators and autotest apps, a glow in the dark keypad, an LED flashlight and remote control via a web browser. Up to five technicians can share one meter with separate profiles. Test results and configurations can be synchronized with the cloud-based StrataSync asset and data management service over Ethernet, DOCSIS or WiFi.
