Overview

The Anritsu Remote Spectrum Monitor MS27102A is a platform for monitoring and recording signals in user-specified frequency ranges from 9 kHz to 6 GHz. It is used to mitigate interference and to identify illegal or unlicensed signal activity. Sweep rates of up to 24 GHz/s allow it to capture periodic and transient transmissions as well as short bursty signals. A 20 MHz instantaneous FFT bandwidth supports wideband real-time captures for later post-processing, for example capturing the entire FM radio band (88 MHz to 108 MHz) in one capture.

The monitor is housed in an IP67-rated weatherproof enclosure for permanent or semi-permanent outdoor mounting, and a mounting plate for pole installation is supplied. It ships with one RF input. Options add two, four or six RF input ports for use with multiple antennas. It runs from an 11 VDC to 24 VDC supply and typically draws less than 11 W, which also allows operation from solar power. IQ data can be recorded in block mode or streamed. A save-on-event function records spectrum measurements only when user-defined thresholds are exceeded.

Remote operation and reliability

The unit is built for deployment far from the control center. It supports remote power cycling, automated system recovery, a watchdog timer and firmware updates pushed remotely. A protected "Golden" firmware image restores operation if an update fails or the firmware becomes corrupted.

Communication

An integrated web server lets users control the instrument from any browser (Chrome and Firefox are supported) on a PC, tablet or smartphone. Users can set frequency, RBW/VBW and reference level, and view traces and spectrograms. Gigabit Ethernet handles data transfer. The monitor can also be programmed with SCPI commands. Each IQ sample pair is time-stamped using the integrated GPS receiver, which supports time difference of arrival (TDOA) geolocation.

Vision software

The optional Vision MX280001A PC software automates data collection and has two components. Vision Monitor (option 400) records spectrum history, raises alarms and sends email alerts. Vision Locate (option 401) geolocates interference sources using three or more monitors. IQ data captured on the monitor can be analyzed with the IQ Signal Master MX280005A software when option 128 is installed.
