Overview
The VIAVI mISW-C1 Optical Switch Tray is part of the MAP series optical switch solutions, built on the fourth generation of VIAVI instrumentation-class optical switch technology. It brings the performance and repeatability of the larger fixed-format 19-inch VIAVI rack-mount switch systems into a tray format, and according to VIAVI can reduce the size of switching systems by as much as 75% while increasing switching speed by 50%.
The mISW-C1 is optimized for switch configurations with more than 24 channels. The tray is selected together with its chassis and mounted at the factory: the 2U MAP-202C is used for lower channel counts, and the 4U MAP-204C accommodates up to 176 switch outputs. The tray is not modular; access is provided for service only.
Switches are not cascaded to create large channel counts, so insertion loss, polarization-dependent loss and repeatability are the same regardless of switch size. Expanded-beam technology keeps multimode versions modally transparent, preserving IEC-specified launch conditions for insertion-loss testing. VIAVI specifies both the electro-mechanical switching time and the settling time needed to reach a stable insertion loss.
Configurations and control
The mISW-C1 supports single common input (1C), duplex (2D) and dual parallel (2E) input types, which can reduce the number of switches a test system needs. An optional Power Trim (PTRIM) function on single-mode 1C versions adds a bidirectional in-line power monitor and up to 20 dB of programmable loss on the connected path. The SCPI remote interface accepts MAP series style commands and keeps compatibility with the VIAVI SB/SC series optical switches. The tray is part of the LightDirect module family of the VIAVI Multiple Application Platform (MAP), which supports remote VNC, Ethernet, GPIB and local GUI control.
Key Features
- All-optical switching independent of data rate and transmission format
- Low loss for all configurations from 1x2 to 1x176
- Switches are never cascaded; IL, PDL and repeatability are the same regardless of switch size
- SCPI remote interface with MAP series style commands or backward compatibility to VIAVI SB/SC series optical switches
- 0.04 dB PDL and ±0.005 dB repeatability on single-input versions
- PTRIM option measures in-line power and adds up to 20 dB of coarse programmable loss on a connected port
- 1C, 2D (duplex) and 2E (dual input in each channel) input configurations
- Expanded beam technology makes multimode switches modally transparent
- Available in single-mode, OM1 and OM3 multimode, and 1310 nm and 1550 nm polarization maintaining fiber
- Specified settling time in addition to electro-mechanical switching time
- Factory-mounted in a 2U MAP-202C or 4U MAP-204C chassis
- GUI with hover-and-release channel selection, switch-type schematics and programmable connection table
- Complies with CE, CSA/UL/IEC61010-1 and LXI Class C requirements when installed in a MAP series chassis
