Overview

The VIAVI FTH-5000 Fiber Test Head, formerly named the OTU-5000 Optical Test Unit, combines optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) and optical-switch technology to provide continuous OTDR monitoring of multiple fibers anywhere in the network. It offers the features and performance of an OTDR and an optical switch in a small rack-mounted footprint.

According to the data sheet, a single FTH-5000 can test up to 48 point-to-point or point-to-multipoint fibers of 100 km and more in a volume occupying only one third of a 1RU shelf. The remaining two thirds can be used by a Test Access Point (TAP) module to monitor fibers in service, or to expand the switch capacity. External high port density optical switches can be cascaded to scale the number of monitored fibers further.

The FTH-5000 qualifies the network during construction and then detects and notifies users of any degradation affecting fibers once the network is in service. This supports fault location, early detection of fiber degradation and detection of fiber intrusion or tapping.

Software

The built-in FTH software allows monitoring to be set up quickly through a web browser. The unit is compatible with the VIAVI ONMSi Remote Fiber Test System, which provides network-wide monitoring while managing multiple FTH units concurrently. The FTH-5000 is also part of the VIAVI Remote PHY turn-up and maintenance solution.
