Overview

The VIAVI SmartPocket V2 OLP-39G is a TruePON tester in the SmartPocket V2 family of pocket-sized fiber test instruments. It is intended for fiber technicians working in the last mile of FTTH deployments. It is a wavelength-selective Passive Optical Network (PON) power meter with TruePON data analysis of the downstream PON-ID.

TruePON analysis

TruePON lets the instrument read the OLT-ID carried in the downstream PON-ID data. This confirms that the technician is at the right drop terminal and that the drop fiber connects back to the correct OLT port. The instrument also detects the ODN class, which allows in-service insertion loss measurement. The PON-ID data it reads is standardized by ITU-T G.984.3 Amendment 3 for G-PON and by ITU-T G.987.3 Amendment 1 for XGS-PON. TruePON information is attached to stored measurement results. This gives an audit trail, or birth certificate, that records the power levels and OLT connectivity at the time of install.

ONT detection

An optional ONT detection function identifies the serial number, ONT type, ONT-ID and status of the ONT under test. This gives a 1:1 assignment of OLT port and ONT serial number.

Field use and data handling

The tester has one SC test port for measurement and IP44 protection against water and dirt. It runs on AA batteries or USB-C power, and its display uses softkeys. Results can be downloaded over USB-C to a PC. They can also be synced over Bluetooth Low Energy through the Mobile Tech App to StrataSync.
