Overview

The VIAVI MAP Series Optical Spectrum Analyzer (mOSA-C1) is a diffraction-grating-based spectral measurement module for the MAP-300 Multiple Application Platform. Part number MOSA-C1A1G1A-M100-MFA is the all-band version of the module: it covers the full single-mode fiber range from 1260 to 1660 nm, is supplied in the general performance grade with manual calibration, and has a single-mode fiber FC/APC input. The module occupies one slot in a MAP-300 mainframe. A C- and L-band only version (MOSA-C1CLG1A-M100-MFA) is offered separately.

As part of the MAP mainframe family, the mOSA-C1 can be combined with over 15 optical application modules to build test solutions for coherent and client transceivers, source lasers, optical amplifiers and passive components. It complements the C-band focused, coherent-measurement-based mHROSA-A1 module within the same platform. The module is currently compatible with the MAP-300 mainframe family.

Measurement principle and speed

The mOSA-C1 is built around a next-generation monochromator with a direct drive that has been designed for over 10 years of continuous use. A full 400 nm scan takes as little as 1.6 seconds, and the power measurement subsystem records traces at the full 1 pm sampling resolution while scanning at 1800 nm/s. Measurements are acquired at full resolution so that regions of interest can be zoomed and panned after the scan without re-measuring. Scanning over smaller ranges is possible to reduce measurement time. Averaging of low-power signals is performed across multiple individual scans, so a region of interest is visible almost immediately.

Analysis functions

Standard on-board functions include markers, zoom controls, trace memory and trace math, automated referencing and an analysis results table, with data download through the web interface. Optional licensed analysis packs add measurements for passive components (CWDM and DWDM filter parameters), transceivers (CW and OSNR for coherent and client optics), amplifiers (gain and noise figure) and CW sources (side-mode suppression, central wavelength, number of modes and bandwidth).

User interface and remote automation

The graphical user interface is web accessible and can also be used on an HDMI monitor; a version with an integrated touchscreen can be ordered. Remote control uses SCPI-compliant commands over Ethernet, and the MAP mainframe can be ordered with an optional GPIB port. Two automation methods are provided: a Direct-to-Module command set for setting up, initiating and downloading trace data, and an Application Environment interface that exposes the advanced analysis functions for extracting key parameters.

Calibration

The module contains an internal calibration source with both an acetylene gas cell and a broadband light source. A manual connection on the faceplate links the calibration output to the mOSA-C1 input, after which the wavelength calibration runs automatically and completes in a few minutes.
