Overview
The VIAVI OVF-1 is a pen-size visual fault locator for field personnel who need a tool for fiber tracing, fiber routing and continuity checking in an optical network during and after installation.
The instrument injects visible laser light at 635 nm into the fiber. Fiber breaks, microbends and poor optical splices show up clearly as light glows through the fiber buffer or outer jacket. The OVF-1 can also locate faults just behind optical connectors, where OTDR measurements are limited by dead zones. According to the datasheet, fiber tracing is possible over more than 5 km on single-mode fibers, and a blink mode makes faults easier to see in bright ambient light.
Connectivity
The universal push-pull (UPP) adapter fits all standard 2.5 mm optical connector types and holds the connector without any extra mechanical fixing. An optional external adapter converts the 2.5 mm UPP to a 1.25 mm UPP, so the OVF-1 can also connect to connectors with a 1.25 mm ferrule, such as LC, MU or F3000.
Design
The OVF-1 has a rugged metal housing and runs on two AAA alkaline batteries. It is compact and light enough to fit in a vest pocket.
