Overview

The VIAVI FI-10 and FI-11 are rugged, handheld installation and maintenance instruments that identify optical fibers by detecting the optical signals transmitted through a single-mode fiber. They use local detection technology based on non-destructive macro-bend detection, so the fiber does not have to be opened at the splice point for identification and the risk of interrupting service is avoided.

The probe is clamped onto a fiber and indicates whether there is no signal, a 270, 1000 or 2000 Hz modulated tone, or live traffic. Signals detected include continuous wave (CW), live optical transmission and low-frequency modulated tones. When traffic is present, LEDs on the probe indicate the direction of transmission.

The FI-11 adds core power measurement: the relative core power in the fiber is measured and shown on a two-digit, seven-segment LED display, which allows power loss through a splice or connector to be measured. It also provides a relative zero power reading.

The identifier was tested to Bellcore technical reference TR-NWT-000764 by attaching it to a bare 1" section of fiber 20 times; no microscopically visible damage to the fiber coating was found on old or new fibers. Interchangeable adapter heads accommodate jacketed, coated or ribbon fiber.

Tone identification with VIAVI light sources

Single-mode fibers can be identified using an OLS-35 or OLS-55 FP laser source, both of which provide tone modulation at 270 Hz, 1 kHz and 2 kHz. The recommended wavelength for tone identification is 1550 nm.
