Overview

The Sercalo EBMM3 (Evaluation Board for Magnetic Mirrors) is an electronics module that interfaces with the Sercalo Magnetic MEMS Mirror product family for optical beam steering and scanning. It drives a dual-axis mirror in open-loop mode, or in closed-loop mode when the connected device has a feedback sensor. When the board is reset, it sets its driver configuration automatically to match the connected mirror.

Design

The EBMM3 is sold as a complete development kit made up of two boards in one enclosure. The driver board has a DSP unit and the output connection for the magnetic MEMS mirror. The interface board provides the USB interface, analog inputs and outputs, the I/O extension connector and power management. The driver board can also be supplied on its own (option DB), so the controller can be built into a smaller package.

Control and communication

The user controls the mirror through a Unix-style command-line interface over UART. The CLI is reached through the front-panel I/O connector or the USB-C connector, which shows up on the computer as a virtual COM port. With the CLI the user can build reference patterns, set the control strategy, read sensor values and configure the MEMS mirror. Each axis can also follow a ±5V analog reference signal. The analog signals connect through SMA connectors on the back panel or through the front-panel I/O connector.

User I/O

Five status pins have fixed functions and are also shown as LEDs. Five more I/O pins can be programmed by the user. A dedicated MOSFET output switches a laser diode on and off in sync with the scan. The analog outputs can return the reference signal, the drive voltage, the measured current or the feedback sensor reading.

Key Features

  • Plug-and-play: driver configuration set automatically on reset based on the connected Sercalo magnetic MEMS mirror
  • Drives a dual-axis mirror in open-loop or closed-loop (on devices with feedback sensor)
  • Reference signals created and modified via CLI or analog signals
  • Unix-like command-line interface over UART, via I/O connector or USB-C virtual COM port
  • Each axis controllable with a ±5V analog reference signal (16-bit ADC)
  • Two analog outputs (12-bit DAC) for reference, drive voltage, measured current or feedback sensor
  • Five user-programmable I/O pins and five status pins displayed as LEDs
  • MOSFET laser synchronization output to activate/deactivate a laser diode
  • SMA analog inputs and outputs on the back panel
  • Driver board available separately for integration into a smaller package
