Overview
The Luna os1100 and os1200 are fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for strain and temperature measurement in fiber optic sensing systems. The os1100 contains a single FBG centered in a two-meter length of polyimide-coated optical fiber. The os1200 is a splice-free array of five FBGs at standard center wavelengths, spaced at one-meter intervals on a six-meter cable.
An FBG is a reflector written inside the core of the fiber and set to a specific wavelength of light. When the fiber at the FBG location is exposed to strain or temperature, the grating's center wavelength shifts higher or lower. The direction and magnitude of the shift are proportional to the change in strain or temperature. The os1100 is available in many distinct center wavelengths, so multiple gratings can be multiplexed on a single fiber, either by splicing individual os1100 sensors into an array or by using the pre-built os1200.
The polyimide coating transfers strain through the fiber coating to the FBG in the core and performs over a wide temperature range. Both sensors use non-metallic construction with clearly marked FBG locations. One or two FC/APC connectors and loose buffer tube protection are available as packaging options.
The sensors are used in applications ranging from introductory FBG experiments to the construction of complex transducers containing one or more gratings, and are paired with Luna HYPERION interrogators as part of a high-speed multipoint fiber optic sensing system.
