Overview

The CIR is a 3-port fiber optic circulator from the passive component line originally developed by General Photonics and now part of Luna. It separates signals travelling in opposite directions along a fiber by transmitting light from port 1 to port 2 and from port 2 to port 3, while blocking signals travelling in the reverse directions.

The circulator is offered with single-mode or polarization-maintaining fiber at 1310 nm, 1550 nm or 1064 nm. The standard configuration for PM circulators is fast axis blocked; versions with both axes open may be available with a different package size and specifications.

In addition to the pigtailed CIR, the NCIR NoTail version has no external pigtails, which simplifies laboratory use and storage. NoTail 3- and 4-port components include mounting magnets for placement on an optical table. The 1064 nm SM version is not available in the NoTail configuration.

Typical uses include add/drop filters, EDFAs, dispersion compensation, fiber sensors and bi-directional communication. Luna lists this product as discontinued.
